Luck Has Nothing To Do With It: A Simple Way To Develop More Resilience

By Jacqueline Frost with Emma McGinty

In the last episode of Finding Your EPIC, in 2023, host Jacqueline Frost sits down with Emma McGinty, Strategic Partnerships Lead at Google. They discuss Emma’s superpower, why success has nothing to do with luck, and a simple way we can all develop more resilience.

For the full conversation, Finding Your EPIC  is available here

Where does resilience come from and how can we develop more of it?

Emma: “When I think about resilience, it’s not something that we’re born with. I don’t think it’s something that just comes to us. You really get to understand what resilience is and put it into practise when you’ve been through the highs and lows of life, like all of us have on our journey to where we are today. For me that moment came when I became a mother.”

It’s all well and good throwing around the word “resilience”, but how do we nurture it in ourselves and in others?

For Emma, the answer is simple: kindness.

Emma: “I just try and be kind to everyone that I meet and I treat everybody the same regardless of who they are or where they come from. That’s so important to me.”

We’re all human. Of course there will be times when we feel annoyed or frustrated at an individual or situation. But if we can turn our perspective around – literally do a 180 on the situation – we arrive at empathy. We might be able to say “perhaps this person was just having a bad day,” or “I made a mistake but I am still capable.”

A kind approach dispels negative energy and allows a situation to become productive. If we are kind to others, we are kind to ourselves, and in this way we can hone our resilience.
